In the summer of 2023, I was in my second treatment center in Dallas, Texas, 5 months well into my recovery process. I had decided that I was going to go back to school to study Addiction Counseling at Harding University in Searcy Arkansas. Which was in the same town as my first treatment center that I was placed into.
I was soon offered a job as a house manager at the treatment center I was in after completing my 12 steps and proving to myself and others that I was committed to my recovery. I felt as though I was at a crossroads, I didn’t know if God was calling me to go back to school or if my calling was to stay in Dallas and continue my ministry. I told them that I would pray on it and make my decision based on what I felt I was getting called toward.
Three days later I got a call that I had a warrant in Indiana and that I would have to go back and spend some time in jail for an old charge that I had. I was told that I would be looking at enough time to hinder me arriving at Harding in time to start the fall semester. I figured that was my sign that I would be staying in Dallas and that God would speak through the Judge.
I had spent a week in jail before my first hearing when I entered a room while handcuffed to a metal table with a giant tv screen reflecting myself. I pleaded my case and the Judge planned to release me just in time to be in Searcy by the first day of class. This is one of the few stories that I have depicting God’s grace as he has allowed me to have a second chance at life.
"He has saved us and called us to a holy life — not because of anything we have done
but because of his own purpose and grace." 2 Timothy 1:10
