How to Translate Websites (Chrome & Safari)

This guide covers how to use built-in translation features in Google Chrome and Apple Safari across all your devices.

1. Windows & macOS (Desktop)

Google Chrome (Windows/macOS)

Chrome usually detects foreign languages automatically and shows a popup in the address bar.

  • Automatic: Click the Google Translate icon in the address bar (next to the Bookmark star).

  • Manual: Right-click anywhere on the page and select Translate to [Language].

  • Change Language: Click the three dots in the translation popup to "Choose another language."

Apple Safari (macOS only)

  • How to translate: Look at the Smart Search field (address bar). If the page can be translated, the Translate button (two speech bubbles with a '文' and 'A') will appear.

  • Action: Click the button and select Translate to [Your Language].

  • Note: If you don't see the icon, the page might not be available for translation in your current region or language.

2. Android

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and go to a foreign language site.

  2. A language bar appears at the bottom. Tap your language.

  3. If the bar is missing: Tap the More icon (three dots) > Translate...

3. iPhone & iPad (iOS)

Google Chrome

  1. Tap the Google Translate icon on the left side of the address bar.

  2. Select Translate.

  3. If missing: Tap the More icon (three dots) at the bottom right > scroll down > Translate.

Apple Safari

  1. Open a website in Safari.

  2. Tap the Page Settings button (represented by AA or a Translate icon) in the address bar.

  3. Tap Translate to [Language].

  4. If it's the first time, tap Enable Translation.

4. Troubleshooting & Settings

"Always Translate" Settings

  • Chrome (All): In the translation popup/bar, select the Gear or Three Dots and check "Always translate [Language]".

  • Safari (iOS): After translating, tap the Translate icon > Manage Languages to download languages for offline use.

Translation Not Appearing?

  1. Chrome: Go to Settings > Languages and ensure "Offer to translate pages..." is toggled ON.

  2. Safari: Ensure your device is updated. Safari translation is available for major languages (English, Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Russian, Portuguese, Italian, Korean, and Japanese).

Translating Images (Menus/Signs)

If the text is inside an image (like a photo of a menu):

  • Chrome/Android: Long-press the image and select Search Image with Google > tap Translate.

  • Safari/iOS: If you have an iPhone with "Live Text," simply long-press the image or tap the Live Text icon (the little square viewfinder) in the bottom right of the image, then tap Translate.
