During our morning devotional time, I asked, "Myrna, did Jesus cry?"
"He wept," she replied. “That verse brings back a hilarious memory when I was the Director of a Christian school. Every Wednesday morning in chapel all the classes quoted a scripture they had memorized that week. There was one class of junior high school students who had memorized and quoted several chapters. Since the upcoming chapel was to include a special program, I asked that teacher to have his class memorize a shorter scripture. Wednesday chapel arrived and all the younger students quoted their scriptures. Then it was time for that class of older students. They stood and with huge smiles said, 'Jesus wept.’ (John 11:35) I burst out laughing! Everyone did.” Myrna laughed hard as she shared that fond remembrance with me.
Then her countenance suddenly changed as she solemnly shared, “Gayle, right now as I was thinking about Jesus weeping over the death of Lazarus and how difficult that loss must have been, the Holy Spirit softly whispered, but gently reminded me of the nightmare we experienced of ‘a fractured relationship’ years ago. We had tried to reconcile the relationship. Yet there hadn’t been any communication from the other person for many years which perpetuated deep sorrow, agonizing pain and intense weeping. I had asked the Lord back then “Why He didn't bring the person to come see us?”
The Holy Spirit softly and gently responded, “I protected you both from a greater sorrow occurring. It would have been much worse if he had.” The Holy Spirit's tender words, enveloping love and overflowing indescribable comfort greatly settled within us that it’s in the Lord's hands.
Maybe you are in the midst of a similar severe, sorrowful heartache and are brokenhearted. The Lord is with you and will comfort you as you lay all your care at His feet. He cares deeply for you.
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” 1 Peter 5:7
