Recently a storm hit with howling winds and torrential rain hammering against our solidly built home. We knew our house would stand having successfully gone through many storms and hurricanes in previous years. Even though this storm seemed to never end, by morning it was gone with the wet ground as evidence it had once been there. Our house had stood firm.
Our lives are like this house. Throughout our lives, many storms will hit and reveal the strength of our faith. Will we get blown away and fall? Or will we stand firm on the Word of God, trusting the Lord to bring us through it?
Jesus told a story of the wise and foolish builders to stress the importance of obedience to His words (Matthew 7:24-27) and how to handle the storms of life. He said,
“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into
practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain
came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that
house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But
everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them
into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The
rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat
against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” Matthew 7:24-27
What storm or devastating news has hit your life recently?
· A son or daughter living an unrighteous lifestyle?
· A life-threatening health prognosis for you or a loved one?
· Dealing with a difficult or broken relationship?
· A financial crisis?
· Death of someone you love?
What will you do? Obedience to Christ does not eliminate life's tempests, but it determines whether we fall or stand in the storm. Stand firm in the faith. This storm will soon pass.
Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.
