Many years ago, I was a young wife and mother living in Weslaco, Texas, with my family. Our house was technically inside the city limits, but we lived next to a field, and it felt like the country. Our house was old, and it had drafty wooden sashes. That house could seem spooky at night. I had problems with fear at that time; so being alone in that house at night was a challenge for me.
In Bible studies, I was learning how I could literally apply God’s word to my life by faith. I was learning that God is FAITHFUL and He watches over His word to perform it!
One night John was away, the children were all in bed, and I was sitting alone at our table, next to some windows. A strong wind was blowing, it was dark outside, and the windows were rattling. I began to feel very fearful.
I opened my Bible and read James 4:7: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
I prayed that scripture aloud, sort of like this: “Father God, it says in Your word that if I submit myself to You, I can then resist the devil and he has to leave. Therefore, in Your name, I do submit myself to You. And by the authority of Your Word, I hereby resist the devil and tell him to flee from me!”
The heaviness lifted! The fear I had been feeling vanished! The change was so remarkable, I still remember it! Praise the Lord that His word and He is faithful to act in our lives!
“ … I am watching over my word to perform it.” Jeremiah 1:12b ESV
