For four years (1980-1984) I (Myrna) worked part-time as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Brownsville supervising student teachers. One day in May 1984 I was in a classroom supervising a student teacher and the thought came: “If I went back to teaching, I’d have to get all these classroom resource materials because I have none. What am I saying? I don’t ever want to go back to teaching in public schools! NEVER!!!”

When I arrived home that afternoon, the local superintendent was in our home looking at Gayle’s collection of antique clocks. Out of the blue, he asked, “Myrna, I’d like you to teach in our district.”

I smiled thinking, “NO WAY”, but I sweetly and politely replied, “I would think (pray) about it.”  After he left, I shared with Gayle the strange thoughts I had while supervising the student teacher and now a superintendent comes to my home asking me to apply.

Gayle laughed and said, “I asked God to put you back into teaching.”

“WHAT?? That’s not fair. How many times did you pray?” I asked.

Still smiling, Gayle replied, “ONE. It only takes one for God to answer.”

Upset, I prayed. I was having trouble submitting what Gayle wanted.  A month later, the superintendent returned to our house saying, “Myrna, I now have two positions and you can have either one.” Now what superintendent goes to someone’s home and asks someone two different times to apply for a job? NONE! But this one did. It was so obvious that God was showing what He wanted. Even the scripture John 4:35 “Lift your eyes and look on the fields, for they are white already to harvest.” kept rolling over and over inside me.

“Lord, I hear You. I will submit to You and Gayle and look at the schools as a mission field…to see others the Jesus way!”

As a result, God opened amazing doors that 1984-85 school year as I taught the fifth grade! Alfredo Mayorga (who was one of my favorite 5th graders) went to church with us on Wednesday nights and 40 years later we still stay in contact. Therefore, we mailed him Books 1-5: GOD STORIES And More booklets and prayed for God to touch and bless his life.

“Lift your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.” John 4:35
